Valtorta

The Via del Ferro (Iron Way) comes to an end in the municipality of Valtorta, where there were many mining deposits. In this town, the main settlement of the area, the Variante Alta (upper route) and Variante Bassa (lower route) join, and continue on a single path to the former mining location Falghera, at the end of the Iron Way. In order to link the Iron Way to the Rete Escursionistica Regionale (Regional Hiking Network), the intention is to extend the route from the main town of Valtorta towards Ceresola and Piani di Bobbio (an old mining route) to the junction with the existing DOL (Dorsale Orobica Lariana, Orobic Lario Ridge) route.

Ornica

At this point, Via del Ferro (Iron Way) descends into Ornica, runs through its rich historic centre and, after going through the hamlet of Sirta, it climbs the slopes of the mountain Pizzo del Rocco, reaching Colle Dudello (altitude 1,337 m) from where the final destination of Valtorta can be seen. As previously, in this section the Way is mainly along footpaths, with short stretches on municipal roads in the village of Ornica.

Cusio

The route followed by the Via del Ferro (Iron Way) in the municipality of Cusio joins the two principal “low altitude” passes in an east-west direction, namely Colla and the Colle della Maddalena saddle at relatively low heights when compared to the basin in which the municipal territory lies (altitude 1,026 m). The pleasant route, not physically difficult, consists of rough country tracks and a long stretch of stepped path in the built-up area of the main town.

Santa Brigida

Moving up the small Val di Guéi valley, the Via del Ferro (Iron Way) overlooks groups of buildings in the municipality of Santa Brigida, set in a prime position. At the Santuario (shrine), the road forks, with the Variante Bassa (lower route) along the Val Stabina valley, and the Variante Alta (upper route) towards Cusio and Ornica. The landscape in the municipality shows the presence of mankind, with stepped paths and sections of the municipal road linking the various groups of buildings. The higher route then moves towards the saddle known as Colla (altitude 915 m) before entering the municipal territory of Cusio.

Mezzoldo

In the municipality of Mezzoldo, starting from the cemetery, the historical and hiking trails coincide and continue without interruptions up to the pass, Passo San Marco, on the boundary with the Province of Sondrio. The initial stretch from the Val di Sera valley to the Mezzoldo cemetery continues along the Via del Ferro trail. As regards hiking, this is the most challenging section in terms of distance (12.2 km) and vertical ascent (1,370 m).

Olmo al Brembo

The Priula Way runs through the municipal territory of Olmo al Brembo almost entirely on footpaths, except for the section inside the town where it intersects with Via Mercatorum (Merchants’ Way) and Via del Ferro (Iron Way). From footpath n° 127 A, the Priula route descends to Cugno di Sotto and then reaches the right bank of the river Olmo. After branches to the Val Mora valley, the path crosses the main town and then begins the ascent of the Valle di Mezzoldo valley following the path on the slopes of the right bank, on the same route as Via del Ferro, and reaching the plainland of Sigadola at mid-slope.
